How Holistic Yoga Therapy Helped Me
Moriah Diederich, Yoga Mojo
Holistic Yoga Therapist™, RYT500, Accessible Yoga Ambassador
I used to wake up in the middle of night with a burning sensation in my hips, unable to return to sleep. My right shoulder ached day and night, and I was often unable to sleep on that side because it hurt so much.
As much as I loved walking and hiking with my dog and hubby I had to take months off moving. I was even reduced to taking baby steps from my car to the office I hurt so much. And I was only 36 at the time.
Me at 22 years old with my lovely hunch-back (kyphosis) in full effect. Please disregard the ugly pj’s. Carving pumpkins is dirty work you know. FUN FACT: With every one inch your head moves forward the weight of your head doubles. The average head weighs 10-12lbs. My head must be at least 40lbs here in this picture. My poor neck and shoulder muscles! Can anyone say headache?!
I’d love to blame my desk job on the pain I felt, but in truth, the problem wasn’t my career. One could say the rounding in my spine (kyphosis) that I developed as a teenager could be to blame. My parents even sent me to a chiropractor to help straighten me up. But my problem wasn’t something someone else could fix.
The problem was simple:
- I had not learned how to align my body correctly (ie good posture).
- I didn’t know how to breathe. (I mean – aren’t we born knowing how? If we didn’t, we’d cease to exist, right?)
- Oh, and I stopped moving.
So how did I learn these things? Enter Annie Adamson of Yoga Union Community Wellness Center. In my first Holistic Yoga Therapy session with her she taught me how to sit. And stand-up. Yes, something that I thought I knew how to do all these years became quite challenging because she made me use my core to sit up straight and the power of my legs to stand up. Utilizing Holistic Yoga Therapy she taught me how to be in better alignment, and new ways to move and breathe. And soon the aches and pains I had been so debilitated by began to subside.
I know now that how I felt was not due to getting old, but simply by how I carried myself all those years. The age-old adage of “use it or lose it” really is true. And the good news is that thanks to Holistic Yoga Therapy you don’t have to live with the headaches, neck, shoulder and back pain for the rest of your life.
You alone have the power to feel better. Let me show you how.
